The EU parliament is seriously threatening the rights of internet users. Essentially, they’re going to give control of the internet to the corporations that bankroll them. It’s viciously anti-consumer legislation and it’s about the people in power wanting more money for their coffers while the regular people like you get screwed out of your rights to the internet. The internet is a beautiful thing because it allows for a free flow of ideas and interests. You can share everything you know with someone else and they can share what they know with you and we all get smarter as a result.
Here’s how it’s going to go down. The new Telecoms package that’s up for vote in the EU proposes that broadband providers be able to limit the number of websites you look and to determine whether or not you’re allowed to use specific services. Essentially, they want to be able to funnel you to the services that make them money, not the ones that you want to choose. It’s utterly ridiculous and awful and as mentioned, it’s anti-consumer in an aggressive and vicious kind of way.
They’re counting on you not knowing what’s going on. They’re counting on you simply ignoring it and figuring that the government wouldn’t do that sort of thing to you. You can’t take that for granted though. Money runs the world and if the government is influenced by enough money then they will certainly do anything they can do screw over the little guy because they figure the little guy won’t make enough noise. That’s where you come in. You need to make lots and lots of noise. You need to get loud and get crazy. You need to make sure that your internet rights are protected. Don’t let the government screw you.
